Wildfire Awareness + Safety for Outdoor Programs
This webinar is for forest school workers, environmental educators and other outdoor practitioners to collaborate in preparation of CA wildfire season and inclement weather circumstance ahead. This webinar will be hosted by Liana Chavarín and Lia Grippo of the California Association of Forest Schools.
Saturday 8/20/22 @10am (Pacific)
This is a photo of the Red Sky Day from September 9, 2020 taken at our forest school meeting location.
We cancelled school that day. Even though the air quality was at healthy levels on the ground, The San Francisco Bay Area experienced a day of increasing darkness due to wildfire smoke above the marine layer, which increased risks to our safety.
As we know, the climate crisis we are facing is having increased impacts on our programs. Our intention is to come together to share and receive ways to continue operating safely, and when to cancel or reschedule program for that day.
Join Liana Chavarín of Berkeley Forest School and Lia Grippo of Wild Roots Forest School (Santa Barbara / Chumash Land), as we connect and share safety practices and preparations for forest schools and outdoor programs for the upcoming wildfire season. We’ll cover evolving practices for safety during wildfire and resulting unhealthy air quality levels, and for other inclement weather issues programs may be facing as well.
I will also be sharing health and safety practices for safer workplace environments, informed by the EPA and OSHA recommendations.
This workshop is being offered through the CA Association of Forest Schools, and this will be my third year offering this annual zoom session. A recording of this webinar will be sent to all registrants after this event.
This event is free for CAFS members, and there is a suggested donation of $5-15 for those who are able to contribute to the growth of this work. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.
